Third Thursdays Kickoff: Wen Ho Lee and the Lakireddy Bali Reddy Case

Time: 7pm.
Location: Locus.

To kick off the first Third Thursdays event, meet with peers over dinner for a short panel discussion on two major cases currently involving the Asian American and Pacific Islander community. Facilitated group discussion follows.

Panel Description:
Sujatha Jesudason from Asata - Alliance of South Asians Taking Action will talk about the case against Lakireddy Bali Reddy case, a prominent South Asian landlord who has been charged with two counts of importing and harboring Indian citizens into the US for the purposes of prostitution or immoral purposes.

Victor Hwang of the Asian Law Caucus will talk about the Wen Ho Leecase. Dr. Lee was recently released after spending 9 months in solitary confinement. He was charged with 59 counts of mishandling documents about nuclear weapons and allegedly was a Chinese spy. After several attempts to reach a plea agreement, he was finally released on September 13th, as the government dismissed all but one charge. The case’s judge apologized for the incarceration and said the case has”embarrassed this entire nation.”
