In April 2000, MIT sophomore, Elizabeth Shin, died of self-inflicted burns following several suicide attempts and numerous consultations with the college counseling system. Thomas Ray Ho, a Lowell High School junior, model student and athlete, fatally shot himself on May 2002, shocking family and friends. These well-publicized tragedies are part of an emerging exposure of mental health issues in the API community.
Come participate in our emerging understanding of API mental health. Panelists include 2nd & up generation APIs with depression, bipolar disorder and a local npo treatment provider representative. Panel topics include:
- What are the pervading mental health challenges?
- How can we better identify high-risk members?
- What are the barriers for diagnosis, treatment, and prevention?
In addition, members from various Bay Area mental health organizations that specialize in servicing the API community will be present at the facilated discussion groups.
