This month, most media coverage and collective thoughts will center on the one year anniversary of 9/11, the lives lost, and dear friends and families affected. At the same time, post 9/11 has brought civil rights to the forefront as more and more communities’ civil rights are restricted by legislation such as the Patriot Act. But even before, the API communities civil rights have always been severely impacted.
From the Dr. Wen Ho Lee’s espionage charge to the threat of job loss for Filipino airport screeners, each case has revealed the constant struggle facing Asian Americans to protect civil rights that are often narrowed out of national security concerns and nationalistic tendencies. This month’s TT looks at the state of Asian American civil rights in the post 9/11 era.
