Last year, the Asian American community in the Bay Area felt the loss of prominent Asian American Studies scholars and influential activists who were long regarded as leaders in the community. The Civil Rights movement and Vietnam era politics heavily influenced many of the API leaders that we learned about in Asian American studies courses, and many of us in the younger generation benefited from the path paved by those who led the Asian American movement.
The future of leadership in the Asian American community appears to be promising, as evidenced by thriving arts, political, and social organizations that are actively engaging young API professionals. However, many organizations experience a high turnover in leadership and there are few individuals who can speak for the API community at large. This month’s TT looks at what the emerging leaders of Asian America needs to know in order to attempt to fill the big shoes left by leaders who have recently passed. Specifically the program focuses on the issues & trials faced by former community leaders, themes used to unite the API community, and potential challenges in leading the community in the future.
Speakers include:
- Yuri Kochiyama
Civil Rights Activist
- Henry Der
State Administrator, Emery School District, Alameda County
Former Executive Director
Chinese for Affirmative Action
