Detention and Disappearance — 60 years later, it’s happening again but this time no one even knows.
In the aftermath of September 11, 2001, racial profiling has led to the arrests and detention of numerous individuals in the South Asian and Arab-American communities. More recently, Filipino airport screeners in the Bay Area risk losing their jobs to federalization because they are not U.S. Citizens. Such government actions are justified as necessary national security measures.
These actions are nothing new, as our panelists will provide historical and legal insight on the issue of racial profiling beginning with Korematsu v. U.S. They will analyze how these practices affect communities of color and suggest ways in which such practices may be minimized through coalition building, litigation, and other creative strategies.
