Racial Privacy or Racial Peril?:

Third Thursdays & CAaPIAN present

Thursday, September 18
7-9:30pm
Locus-1640 Post Street
San Francisco

Amid all the political headlines with the
October recall election lurks a ballot decision
potentially more important than selecting the next
governor of California. Proposition 54, also known
as the Racial Privacy Initiative or Classification by
Race, Ethnicity, Color, or National Origin
Initiative (CRENO) states that “[t]he state shall not
classify any individual by race, ethnicity, color or
national origin in the operation of public education,
public contracting or public employment”, and would
enact severe limitations on the type of racial data
all California government agencies may collect.
Proponents argue the proposition will help eliminate
govenment discrimination while saving the state
millions of dollars. Opponents, however, argue such
legislation will cause detrimental effects for all
races in such areas as health care, education, and
civil justice and will only mask discrimination.

To help voters make a more informed decision on
this significant and far-reaching legislation, this
month’s Third Thursdays will explore the potential
impact of Proposition 54 and issues surrounding
it.

Come join us for an educational and informative
discussion of the pros and cons of Proposition 54
as we examine what the proposition states, what it
means for racial privacy, and how it will affect
all Californians in the areas of health care,
education, and civil justice.

Panelists include:

  • Dr. Alex Li
City and County of San Francisco
    Department of Public Health
    Chinatown Public Health Center
