While we start Third Thursdays in our new home at the JCCCNC, large numbers of low-income API tenants across the Bay Area are facing eviction from their homes. The struggle to maintain affordable housing has recently hit low-income housing communities such as Oakland Chinatown’s Pacific Renaissance Plaza, Trinity Plaza on Market Street, and the Fong Building in the heart of San Francisco Chinatown.

Given the Bay Area’s chronic housing shortage, it is difficult to find balance between the preservation of affordable housing and the desire for urban renewal and redevelopment. This dilemma is further complicated in the API community by different cultural interpretations on basic housing and property ownership rights

At the next Third Thursdays, we will offer an overview of the current status of affordable housing in API communities and discuss how public institutions, developers, and API community groups and individuals can influence each other to promote a commitment to affordable housing.
