We first considered a topic on “Start-up Nonprofits” because most of the established Asian American non-profit organizations started when the civil rights movement and Third World strikes generated a strong need to create organizations that served the community. This need overrided most founders’ concerns that they weren’t equipped to run the organization, couldn’t find funding, or how it might affect their futures. We wanted to tell story of how starting up a non-profit today differed, as we see nonprofits merging, applying for the same funding, and working hard to find and retain good staff.
While researching start-up non-profits, we found some start-ups but not nearly as many as expected. Instead, we learned that there were many different types of non-profit initiatives, including projects started by other non-profits or foundations, all-volunteer organizations, collaborative projects, and 501c3 organizations. This month, we feature non-profit initiatives and how they grew from an idea to their current form.
