API Children Left Behind: Exploring the achievement gap and how Asian Pacific Islander students fare in public schools

Thursday, August 19th
7-9:30pm
Japanese Cultural & Community Center of Northern California
1840 Sutter
San Francisco

As the summer draws to a close, Third Thursdays prepares for the back-to-school season with a discussion around public education in the Bay Area. Despite the relative success of many API students, there are many recent immigrants, English language learners, and other API youth who must seek services from nonprofit organizations outside the school system to find the support they need to succeed in school.

This month, Third Thursdays will be featuring local educators and community leaders who will discuss the diverse factors that have led to the achievement gap among API students. They will also share vantage points on their efforts to close that gap and ideas on how local professionals can help.

Panelists include:
  • Simon Chiu
    Assistant Principal
    Moreau Catholic High School
  • Ron Muriera
    Program Director
Asian American Communities for Education - Upward Bound
  • Keith Nomura
    Executive Director,
    Oakland Unified School District
Moderated By:
