New Year’s Resolution 2005: Volunteering in Our Community

Thursday, January 20th
7-9:30pm
Japanese Cultural & Community Center of Northern California
1840 Sutter
San Francisco

2003: Lost ten pounds and kept it off.

2004: Learned to cook. Goodbye ramen dinners.

2005: ????

Thinking about doing more community work during your off hours but have yet to take the plunge? Why not make a New Year’s resolution out of it, and make 2005 a year for personal volunteerism in the API community. Let Third Thursdays point you in the right direction and help you make the most of your experience. For seasoned community volunteers, come share personal experiences and offer your best tips & advice.

Speaking from their extensive community experience, our guest panelists will focus upon the larger themes of personal fulfillment and community-building through short- or long-term volunteerism. How do we promote individual growth — intellectually, career skills, etc. — by spending a few hours at the senior center or engaging in months-long advocacy work challenging the evictions of senior tenants? And, how can we put time beyond our full-time jobs into community volunteerism that is both meaningful and sustainable?

Among the issues we’d like to hit:

  • Volunteering areas, the usual suspects and the undiscovered, that may be the best match for you.
  • Secrets for successfully balancing busy professional lives with engaging community work.
  • Forecasting critical social issues within the API community that may need the most support.

(at the forum we also will provide information regarding local volunteer resources)

Panelists include:
  • Darryl Chiang
    Corporate Counsel, Hitachi America, Ltd.
    Board President, Kearny Street Workshop
Board Member, Asian American Theater Company

  • Li Miao

    Counselor, City College of San Francisco;
Volunteer Program Director, College of San Mateo (formerly)

  • Warren Mar
Co-Founder and Board Member, Chinese Progressive Association
