US foreign policy toward Israel and Cuba has been greatly influenced by Jewish-American and Cuban-American interest groups. Can API counterparts successfully engage the American government in similar ways?
Asia continues to make its presence felt in the United States and throughout the world in various ways. China’s growing economic potential makes it attractive to American investors. Nuclear proliferation in North Korea and Taiwanese independence pose concerns for regional and international security. The recent natural disasters have triggered debates over the appropriate amount of aid to give to the struggling countries. What role can API groups play in shaping US foreign policy in Asia?
Here in the Bay Area, a large Asian population coupled with its members’ many strong ties to Asia suggests great lobbying potential in this field for interest groups within the local Asian community. In addition to overviewing past & present national API lobbying efforts on foreign policy, our April Third Thursdays will showcase many of the ongoing local campaigns in this area.
