The fall of Saigon in April 1975 marked not only
the end of the Vietnam war, but also the first
wave of refugees arriving in the United States
from Southeast Asia. While much of the press
surrounding the 30th anniversary of the end of
the war focused on the thriving Vietnamese
diaspora in Orange County and San Jose, there
remains a less familiar story of the resettlement
of Cambodian, Hmong, Laotian, and other mountain
peoples of Southeast Asia.
This month, Third Thursdays focuses on these
overlooked communities with a viewing of Mike
Siv’s short film “Who I Became” followed by a
panel sharing personal stories about the refugee
experience in California. Discussion will also
explore how these communities have grown and
changed since resettlement.

There has been a sad epilogue to the story of Pounloeu Chea who was featured in Mike Siv’s
